This volcanic lava formation, 924 meters high, plunges steeply into the sea, reaching depths of 2000 meters.
It is the largest active volcano in Europe after Mount Etna.
Its 12.6 km² surface is visually dominated by the crater: at night, the "sciara" (the stream of glowing ash descending toward the sea) can be seen from boats and from Panarea. By day, the smoke from the volcano merges with the steam rising from the sea, cooling the glowing remains of lava as they sink into the water after sliding down the slope.
The film "Stromboli, Land of God", directed by Roberto Rossellini and starring Ingrid Bergman, was filmed on the island in 1950.
The white houses of the small village create a striking contrast against the black lava background dotted with dark green shrubs.
